The jungle leads. Every area has its own ambience recipe, recorded as four alternate takes that rotate each pass, so the forest does not repeat for almost three minutes. Water, wildlife and a set of bird calls tuned to the harmony sit on top. The music bed underneath has no melody; it is harmony, bass and soft percussion that the conductor builds up and lets fall away.

What the controls do

  • Intensity raises the music bed's ceiling and brings in hand drums, shaker and marimba. It also makes the wildlife busier.
  • Openness favours pad and e-piano over rhythm and widens the room. High openness leads to the Canopy Vista.
  • Water lifts the river, waterfall and drips, adds kalimba ripples and leads to the River & Waterfall.
  • Mystery thins the percussion, darkens the top end and brings out night creatures. High mystery leads to the Moss Ruins.
  • Music bed sets how much music sits under the jungle. At zero you hear only the jungle.

The highest of Water, Openness, Mystery and Intensity picks the area; Jungle Exploration is home when nothing stands out.

How changes stay musical

  • Layers change only on 4-bar phrase boundaries. Harmony layers (pad, e-piano, bass) may only leave on 8-bar boundaries.
  • Areas change on 8- or 16-bar boundaries. Every area's bar 8 and bar 16 rest on an A chord and every bar 1 is a D chord, so any area can follow any other.
  • A layer that leaves hands over to its own rendered ring-out, so reverb and echoes decay naturally.
  • Ambience and water crossfade over four seconds instead of cutting.
  • Area changes are marked with jungle sounds: a passing shower, a gust through the canopy, a flock taking off, a woodpecker roll.

Using the stems in an engine

Each area's layers are separate files of exactly 2 048 000 samples at 48 kHz. Start them together, loop them whole, and set each layer's volume. Files are named A_amb.ogg, B_water.ogg and so on. A_amb2–A_amb4 are the alternate ambience takes. Every layer also has _tail8 and _tail16 ring-outs: when a layer stops at bar 9 or at the loop point, play the matching tail from that moment. Transition sounds start one bar before the downbeat they lead into.
